MINI, A LEGEND STARTING IN 1959
At the end of 1956, during the Suez Canal crisis and the soaring oil price, the CEO of British Motor Corporation (BMC), that includes Austin and Morris brands, demanded the development of a small and economic car. In less than two years, the first Mini was born !
Designed by the chief designer Sir Alexander Arnold Constantine Issigonis, it tends to revolutionize the imagination of the automobile.
"His vision was that of a small four-door cylinder with optimized use of space and driving comfort, totally different from all current cars both technically and aesthetically and within the reach of all purse. "
During the month of August in 1959, the Mini was finally available in two versions in all countries where BMC were present. The Morris Mini Minor and the Austin Seven are all distinguished by their radiator grille, body colors and hubcaps.
At their start, sales are hesitant because of the novelty, although the English model is welcomed by international press coverage. For example, "The Autocar", a famous English magazine, published: "Fashion often gives birth to stillbirths, but when intelligent and sensible engineers are interested in a subject, the result can be perfectly successful. "
After a complicated debut, the 60s marked a decisive turning point: the glory of the new English car. Available in “sport” and then in "break" version (Cooper and Clubman), its functionalities and aesthetics attract celebrities from all over the world, especially from England !
In the 1970s, the Mini became the fourth most sold car in Europe : a huge success! However, in subsequent years, Mini faced some troubles because of excessive production costs. Finally, in the 1990s, it is Rover (who holds Mini) that will make every effort to improve the manufacturing process. Without any success ; BMW bought the brand.
Nowadays, Mini are such a celebrity ! Customization of the roof, hood, mirrors, everything is conceivable like big luxury brands! In the city as in the countryside, Mini has succeeded in establishing itself as a chic and modern car. In France, they are currently represented in more than 100 points of sale.
