« It's a wonderful universe of quality. The methods have not changed for years! For example at Weston since 1891 some machines are still in use... Can you imagine using actual machines in 125 years : let me doubt about it...
When I work at The Cobbler, I use tools of previous craftsmen who in turn have more than 100 years. Every day can be a moment of history.
Beyond the historical side, fashion, trends are also in the center of my work. There is therefore a real paradox, a real tension in this universe between historic craftsmanship and contemporary fashion.
The universe of luxury shoes came quite naturally to me. I started my apprenticeship with the “Compagnons du Devoir” (a renowned French institution), working initially for a well-known cobbler in Lyon. I eventually started my “Tour de France” at Weston in Limoges. I've learned the recognized Goodyear welted, 100 years after the founder of the house himself has been taught in the United States, sent there by his father. I finally wanted to leave France and therefore continued my “Tour de France” in Spain. Following that, I returned to Paris to work for Clairvoy, a tailor-made bootmaker for Music Hall artists (Moulin Rouge and Lido in particular, which are renowned institutions in Paris).
Following these experiences, the plane was there to go to Dubaï and launch the Cobbler. »
- Can you say a few words about The Cobbler ?
« The Cobbler, is the first traditional shoemaker in the Middle East. The idea was to import a French traditional shoemaking process to meet the growing luxury footwear market in this region. Today we have two workshops in Dubai and one in Abu Dhabi.
We work our own range of ready-to-wear, and also offer a bespoke shoe service. »
- Why to get a foothold in the start of an innovative project ?
« Quite simply the desire to be an adventurer who lives from his passions. Be the first to work on a new market that is constantly evolving. The idea was also to challenge myself, to be on the question side everytime to learn better and faster.
This is obviously also a question of opportunities! It was the right time for me to take my bags and leave ...»
- What is a beautiful shoe ?
« A beautiful shoe is created from a real exchange with the client. The latter should not hesitate to be critical, to express his personality, his habits. The shape of the shoe must reflect his spirit, his character, and here, the sensitivity of the craftsman becomes a key element.
No beautiful shoes without good raw materials. The finest leathers are becoming the exception, and I can see the difficulty of premium brands like Valôme to find qualitative materials, as we are facing this sourcing problem every day. Beyond the material, you also have the craftman who does the job, the one who will repeat secular gestures.
And of course, a good shoe is a shoe that we will review in our The Cobbler shop year after year in order to be soled and serviced. »

- What is your favorite pair of shoes?
« Without hesitation, the Balmoral model in suede and box calf, which comes from the nineteenth century. It is the perfect balance between the tinted Richelieu and a pair of boots. »
- The last word ?
« Living your passions without believing in an utopian and continuous happiness. We need all the time to keep this desire and curiosity for new projects. Pushing ourselves outside of our daily surroundings is the best way to find happiness. In all cases, if there is passion, it will necessarily work. Thank you for this interview and good product launch for Valôme. »
